New York, NY — Nearly one hundred friends and supporters who've contributed their time, talent and resources to help further CancerCare's mission, were honored recently at our annual Tribute to Our Friends, held on September 23 at CancerCare's national office in New York City.
The evening reception included refreshments and an awards ceremony recognizing individuals and companies who raised funds and awareness over the last year for our free counseling and support services for anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.
Honorees included cancer survivor Dan Foster (with CancerCare Special Events Coordinator Bertie Downs, photo right) ,whose annual "Dan's 5K Fun Run/Walk," held every September for the past 6 years in Foster's Brooklyn neighborhood of Gerritsen Beach, raised over $16,500 for the CancerCare for Kids program.
Edgar Moreno (with CancerCare Social Worker Floyd Allen, photo left) was also commended for launching the "I Want to Dance Fund" with a $5,000 gift. This unique program, based on his personal experience as a cancer survivor, will provide dance instruction as a form of therapy to CancerCare clients in New York City.
Long Island residents Bob Staats and his daughter, Andrea Staats (photo right) were singled out for the special CancerCare fund they created in memory of wife and mother Suzanne Mercier Staats, who passed away in 2007. As CancerCare clients, Suzanne and Bob dedicated many hours to supporting our national lung cancer program.
Eric P. Winer, MD (with Executive Director of CancerCare Diane Blum, photo left), received the 2008 Physician of the Year Award to recognize his long-time support of CancerCare and breast cancer patients. Dr. Winer is director of the Breast Oncology Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and also serves as chief medical officer of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
Lynn Flanagan (with CancerCare's Carolyn Messner, director of education and training, photo right) received the Donor of the Year Award for funding a recent Telephone Education Workshop on triple negative breast cancer. Flanagan, who is a breast cancer survivor, funded the workshop through a foundation she started and named in honor of her sister-in-law, Angela Andrews Ryan, who passed away from triple negative breast cancer last year. It was the first CancerCare workshop to focus on this highly aggressive form of breast cancer and the first to be funded by an individual donor.
Other honorees were CancerCare of Long Island board member Steven Geismar (Leadership Award), international real estate firm Hines (Corporate Responsibility Award) and CancerCare board member and Ruder Finn Healthcare executive vice president, Susan Smirnoff (Volunteer of the Year).
